Open doors

ASSIOA wishes to support the academic development of younger scholars and their positioning and integration in the academic community. For this reason, it is proposed a Doctoral & Early Scholars Career Workshop, to facilitate the socialization of junior scholars to the academic career and to discuss challenges related to the different dimensions of academic work (e.g., research, teaching, administrative duties, community service, and juggling between career and personal life).
This workshop is structured as a conversation between junior and senior academics and it is aimed at strengthening the junior scholars’ involvement in the ASSIOA community and to help them in finding their place in academia.

The workshop will take place on Thursday, September 9 in the afternoon and on Friday, September 10 in the morning 2021, before WOA, in the Department of Economics and Business Studies, University of Genoa.

Content and Objectives

Scholars need to understand rapidly how to cope with a constant pressure in their career (the so called “publish or perish” phenomena) being subject to constant deadlines and evaluations to their teaching, research and profile and frequent requests for revising and enhancing the quality of their work. This scenario creates a constant tension between the need to balance personal passions and preferences (without forgetting to have a life outside) on the one hand, and the needs of and expectations from various stakeholders on the other. Young and talented students often look at the academic instructors as coaches and mentors to develop, adjust and reflect on their career aspirations.

The First Doctoral & Early Scholars Career Workshop will focus on presentations, discussions and small-group workshops dedicated to:

  • Developing a better understanding of the various dimensions of academic work, their rationale, and their importance in various stages of the academic career.
  • Exploring how to organize these multiple dimensions, first of all balancing teaching requirements and writing.
  • Reflecting upon your identity and voice as a researcher, an educator and a citizen of various academic communities, with an opportunity for hands-on exchange about diverse career paths and ways to achieve relevance and impact.
  • Thinking of your career, listening to the experiences of senior scholars, reflecting on success and failures, learning how to approach them and develop with them mentoring relationship.
  • Reflecting upon some possible strategies that could help conciliating career with personal and family commitments.

Application Guidelines

To be considered for participation in the First Doctoral & Early Scholars Career Workshop 2021, applicants should be in the third or final year of their PhD program or have completed their doctoral dissertation within the last eight academic years.
Please apply for admission to the workshop by June 15 at the latest and upload – via e-mail (descw@assioa.it) – a single PDF file that contains the following mandatory information:

  • letter of application, containing name, affiliation, postal & e-mail address, as well as your motivation to participate
  • An abstract (1 page) outlining your main area of work or a current paper project
  • Your curriculum vitae
  • Your best publication (a published paper or a work in progress)
  • An aspirational curriculum vitae, explaining where you would like to see yourself in 10–15 years in terms of your academic achievements and focus. This can be a written text (as a free text or as a list-like CV) and/or a recorded short video (max 2 mins). In both cases, it should explain your choices and reflect upon the major challenges you will face in your efforts to move from you current CV to your desired one.

We expect your full commitment once your application has been accepted and you have agreed to participate: a late cancellation effectively blocks an opportunity for one of your colleagues.
